New system of R&D evaluation in Great Britain (from 2013)

The British government currently prepares a new methodology for R&D evaluation - Research Excellence Framework (REF). It' s goal is to make the process of R&D evaluation and funding at British universities more transparent.

Pilot surveys on 22 selected universities took place. On their basis a specific criteria for separate parts of evaluation will be defined and a final methodology of RD evaluation will be issued in 2010. The evaluation methodology should be effective for the evaluation of the results for the year 2013 and R&D funding for the year 2014.

Four grant agencies for universities in UK participate in the research:

  • HEFCE - Higher Education Funding Council for England
  • Scottish funding council
  • Higher Education Funding Council for Wales
  • Department for Employment and Learning (Northern Ireland)
